WASTE SIMMERS #1 ‘Garden of Materials’

On 15 July the ‘Garden of Materials’, takes over the Grondstoffenstation with their ensemble of collected second (or third or fourth) hand objects. Convened by artist AZ OOR, they build a temporary space for thinking with the lives of transient objects.

Within the Netherlands formal and informal infrastructures present opportunitiesfor the organised transfer of second hand objects and materials, from physical kringloop winkels, the website Marktplaats, Rotterdam legend Scrap XL, and our own Grondstoffenstation. Whether the output of personal or industrial use, these platforms create means for material circulation, a movement from one home to the next - bypassing the rubbish bin.

It is a choice to take on a material within these networks, seeing their potential amid narratives of inconvenience or imperfection. Sometimes they bare the marks of their uses, at times we need to attend to their repair so as to bring them into their next life phase.
Please join us for an afternoon as we sit closer to recognising their stories and value, alongside sharing readings, sonic residues for repair and transformation.

Please join us for an afternoon of tasting different home made vinegar based drinks, medicines and cocktails!

For the closing of their residency at the Grondstoffenstation the Garage School of Medicine will set up a bar to share the results of their research and home made vinegars. This will be a festive moment to try different cocktails and refreshing drinks made with the vinegars (banana, mango, pear, maybe nectarine) made from leftover fruit collected at Grondstoffenstation.

A free zine on how to try out home made vinegar yourself, and other publications will be available to peruse and take home.

There will also be snacks made by the Gemaal op Zuid’s neighbourhood kitchen de Wijkkeuken van Zuid and good music vibes provided by Kevin Simon Mancera.

On 12 July, the Grondstoffenstation at Afrikaanderplein Markt hosts Digestive Press — a temporary, low-fi paper factory transforming food scraps, market waste, and ideas into new forms.

Join artists Johannes Hugo Stoll and Lilian Ptáček for a hands-on workshop exploring how discarded market waste can be broken down and reimagined as handmade paper, colour pigments and imagery. In this temporary paper factory we invite you to chew, stew and pulp as we think through digestion, decomposition and reuse.

During the workshop we will demonstrate different methods for creating pulp from waste materials and turning food waste into pigments as well as techniques for creating handmade paper. After which you are invited to use the Digestive Press to create your own artworks. The workshop concludes with a relaxed sharing of the results, accompanied by music, drinks, and snacks.

We will begin with a collective vegetarian lunch as we introduce the workshop - please send by email an rsvp to cultuur@wijkcooperatie.org to help us keep track of lunch numbers :) If you are unable to attend the workshop you are very welcome to arrive later during our experimenting and festive presentation moment!

Johannes Hugo Stoll is an artist working along the intersection of ingestion, digestion and historical and societal narratives.
Lilian Ptáček’s art practice centres around material concerns, exploring the interplay between inward and outward, public and private, in relation to the human body and urban environments.

Join us for an afternoon and evening guided by our noses and artist Dafni Melidou! Situating ourselves at the Grondstoffenstation, we will immerse ourselves in the many scents that waft around, through, and within this environment. In exploring these intricate smells, we will unravel what they conjure in us - not only in terms of personal memory but also in relation to broader questions about shifts in urban life, the neighbourhood, and their impact on the community. We will reflect on how we interpret and communicate these smells and what they reveal about the evolving identity of places like the Afrikaandermarkt.

This event will begin at the Grondstoffenstation where we will carry out a series of playful smell(ing) based activities before wandering over to the Gemaal op Zuid to collectively amass a scent archive of the GSS. There Jamila will greet us with an immersing coffee ritual initiating us into a Friday night of mixologist fun where scent, taste and sound are experimentally paired - hoping to ignite our many senses.

Please feel welcome to join us at the Gemaal op Zuid from 17h for music, food and drinks even if you are unable to attend the initial scent activities commencing from 16h at the Grondstoffenstation.

Dafni Melidou is an artist and researcher exploring the intersections of smell, memory, and urban transformation. Her ongoing research project, Smell Ecologies, supported by CBK I&V, investigates how shifts in Rotterdam's cityscapes impact urban life through the lens of smell.

Join us for a Friday night borrel, 27 September, at the Grondstoffenstation hosted by Tuba Kılıç and Maardewân! Borrelnootjes will be swapped for experimental appetisers made from fruits and vegetables collected at the Gronstoffenstation. Let us share with you these pickling, stewing and baking tests, making the most of leftover ‘waste’ produce of the market. Sweet tunes arranged by the Maardewân community will set the scene and invite us into their diverse backgrounds.

Tuba Kılıç is a Turkish artist and cook currently based in Rotterdam. She is a member of Maardewân, a community of migrant creatives who have found themselves and each other in the Netherlands. Coming from diverse backgrounds and disciplines, they are bonded by their friendship and a shared understanding of mutual aid and collective learning.
