Celestial spheres circuit but never fully arrive. Dreams and desires that have beached at shipyards sail in dervishing motions. The world is feeling the throes of a new poetics. Through newly commissioned works, the artists taking part in the Spiritual Disobedience exhibition series invite us to sense, explore, disrupt and perhaps even temporarily cross the threshold into proposed Other Worlds.

Echoing Gramsci’s classic saying that “the old world is dying, and the new world struggles to be born; now is the time of monsters”–what if we intervene in this linear concept of space-time and explore the possibility of the existence of multiple worlds and parallel timelines? We of colonized histories say: we have always already been ‘monstrous’, come join our worlds. We ask: what portals do we cross through, and what do we wish to carry over?

Spiritual Disobedience proposes a non-dualistic spiritual-material reality in which capitalist infrastructure comes sword to sword with mythopoetic realities rooted in various spiritual knowledge systems. Curated by Yusser al Obaidi and Leana Boven. The story unfolds in three chapters: [Al Falak al Majdoub] [The Entranced Orbit] (AZ OOR), The Shipyard (Zouhair Hammana & Julia Wilhelm) and De Naweeën [The Throes] (Pelumi Adejumo) – each functioning as parallel portals of crossing. Through its public program, the exhibition series Spiritual Disobedience aims to create space for materializing the immaterial disobedient structures that our spirits collectively long for.

Hemellichamen banen zonder zich te aarden. Dromen en verlangens die stranden in havens, varen verder in rondjes als derwisjen. De wereld voelt de naweeën van een nieuwe poëzie. Via nieuwe werken nodigen de kunstenaars in de tentoonstellingsreeks Spiritual Disobedience (Spirituele Ongehoorzaamheid) het publiek uit om te voelen, verkennen, verstoren en mogelijk zelfs tijdelijk de drempel over te steken naar voorgestelde andere werelden.

Verwijzend naar Gramsci’s klassieke uitspraak: “De oude wereld sterft, en de nieuwe wereld worstelt om geboren te worden; nu is de tijd van monsters” vragen wij ons af: bestaan we niet al in meerdere parallelle werelden als we breken met ons huidige lineair tijdsbeeld? Wij, gevormd door het koloniale verleden, zijn altijd al ‘monsterlijk’ geweest. Stap onze werelden binnen. Aan de hand van speculatie en verbeelding vragen wij: welke werelden willen wij overbruggen, en wat nemen we daarin met ons mee?

Hierbij dient ieder hoofdstuk als een parallel portaal naar een andere wereld. In het publieksprogramma maakt Spiritual Disobedience ruimte voor het materialiseren van de immateriële en ongehoorzame structuren waar onze geesten collectief naar verlangen.
