'Strategies on Care - full Land Usership' is een filmavond samengesteld door iLiana Fokianaki, voor het Gemaal. En is te bezoeken op donderdag 8 december van 18:30 - 21:30u. We zullen bij aanvang gezamenlijk een hapje eten. Ben je erbij? Na de film gaat Iliana (pre-rec, EN) in gesprek met de filmmakers. What are the common threads between North European activists trying to protect an ancient forest,
with cultural activists from the Global South, trying to de-privitize land through the use of old legislation? Questions arise in relation to land and property that bring to the fore the binary of ownership versus usership, in this film night with a (pre-rec) discussion (EN) and screenings of the works of Marwa Arsanios and Oliver Ressler, curated by iLiana Fokianaki. How can we care for using land? And is caring for nature enough to overcome the destruction of it by privatization?
Arsanios is presenting her fourth film of the series ‘Who is Afraid of Ideology” and Ressler “The Path is Never the Same” both films finished in 2022.
Arsanios film departs from a collaborative project that is attempting to shift the status of a private land in the North of Lebanon to a common or a social waqf. The aim would be to advance the right of usership over ownership. The land would only be used by people who do not own land for agricultural purposes. The film follows this process and adds to it a reflection on the way land as a living object inherently resists property. Matter and land become a witness to a certain history of non-ownership. The interconnectedness of the geological, the historical, the legal and the agricultural brings forward a kind of ecology of thought whose purpose is communalisation and rehabilitation.
Who is Afraid of Ideology? Part 4 is a project in collaboration with Maya Dghaidi (legal research), Wissam Saade (historical research), Amany Dagher and Wael Yammine from Soils Permaculture Association Lebanon.
Ressler’s film focuses on two complex, self-organizing systems: a forest and an occupation. Long shots show the Hambacher Forest near Cologne, one of Germany’s last old-growth forests. The forest has become the scene of Europe’s longest tree-top occupation. Since 2012, about 200 people have been living in this forest to prevent its clearing by the energy company RWE, which wants to extract the lignite beneath the forest floor. In January 2020, after much of Hambacher Forest was already destroyed, pressure maintained for years by climate activists forced German
politicians to order the preservation of what remained. Meanwhile, lignite extraction continues in an open-air pit that comes ever closer and is now only a few meters from the edge of the forest. The mine fuels climate breakdown and damages the forest’s ecosystem by pumping out ground water. So the occupation also continues: currently there are ten permanently inhabited barrios, each consisting of a camp and several tree houses. The film reflects on the forest as a living space and on the need to confront the climate vandalism perpetrated in the name of “economic activity”. The people here organize non-hierarchically, standing – as one activist puts it in the film – “just like the trees, next to each other, on the same level”.
