KNOCK KNOCK: VOCABULARY OF HOSPITALITY
KNOCK KNOCK: VOCABULARY OF HOSPITALITY 2
...the foreigner is first of all foreign to the legal language in which the duty of hospitality is formulated. They have to ask for hospitality in a language which, by definition is not their own, the one imposed on them by the master of the house, the host, the king, the lord, the authorities, the nation, the State, the father, … This personage imposes on him translation into their own language, and that’s the first act of violence.
Jacques Derrida, of Hospitality

Vocabulary of Hospitality: Knock Knock is about the vocabulary on migration that is instantiated in the city, revealing the intertwined (mis)conceptions of ‘host’, ‘guest’ and ‘hospitality’. The program researches the complexity inherent in the relationship between the ‘guest’ and ‘host’, which encompasses several obligations and tensions. When are the guest and the host strangers to each other? When do they become visitors? What are the thresholds of hostility between hosts and guests? In what context are they enemies or hostages of each other? When does the guest or the host become a ghost?
The presentation at Gemaal op Zuid dissects this complexity that is rendered visible in the urban space. Presentations by belit sağ, Merve Bedir, Philippa Driest, Suat Öğüt focus on the term “guest worker.” The Lichtkrant is programmed with sentences/statements on hospitality by Dubravka Sekulić, Banu Cennetoğlu, Marina Otero and others. Vocabulary of Hospitality: Knock Knock is convened by Merve Bedir, and is a desigual to Vocabulary of Hospitality (2015) in Istanbul, which was an investigation into the spatial vocabulary of illegalized migration in Turkey.
Wider Perspectives #2 - we cry 2gether
Official invitation for the opening of we cry 2gether + DJ set/sonic lecture by Softbreak on Friday September 9th at Gemaal op Zuid (Rotterdam) from 8-10PM
we cry 2gether is a series of new works by Jayda Reeberg that will be on show until October 21st, and is part of Wider Perspectives.
“we cry 2gether is a visual exploration of Black masculinity, Black queerness, Afro-futurism, intergenerational trauma, healing practices among Black communities and spirituality. we cry 2gether is about imagining worlds where Black bodies are centred and celebrated: where unity exists, where all the space is Ours, where Black is not suffering but healing, love and power. The work proposes a move away from individualism towards holding space for our collective liberation by developing our collective consciousness.”
